There’s a severe winter storm coming this Sunday

One to two feet of snow, strong winds, sub-zero temperatures

Conditions that disrupt everything

When disturbances like this are forecasted,

We respond on high alert…

Checking the weather updates and stocking up

The snowblowers, plows, and generators are ready

No one laughs at you for preparing

When it comes to the storms of life,

Many of us react in an opposite way

Life’s turmoils don’t come with a warning

And you can’t predict the timing of their arrival

Some form slowly and others hit suddenly

Leaving you disoriented, bewildered,

And unsure of how long it will last…

Health problems

Relationship fractures

Financial pressure

Loss

Disappointment

When stress is too heavy to ignore

There’s a temptation to power through it

During a snowstorm, we check on one another

But during a personal blizzard in our life

We often push on as if nothing is wrong

Winter squalls teach us something important

Discretion is wise and beneficial

Take the opportunity to ask yourself…

How can awareness flourish in my life?

Be candid about the struggles you’re facing

If circumstances feel bleak right now…

The rough waves don’t define who you are

Courage, wisdom, and strength is growing within you

The flurries pass, and joy will shine in your heart again

With the start of the new year…

I’m less interested in resolutions and drawn to reflection

Between everything that’s happened

And what’s coming next

Another stage of my life has passed

Days with occasions I planned

And circumstances beyond belief

Some brought growth and gratitude

Others had loss and disappointment

Life rarely moves in clean chapters

It has overlapping seasons…

Joy beside sorrow

Hope through uncertainty

Strength overcoming weariness

And yet, here I am…

Standing and breathing

Looking forward to another year

My hope for you in 2026 is this…

Give yourself the freedom to slow down

And notice cherished moments again

Let go of what no longer needs to be carried

Reset without pressure or performance

You don’t need a perfect plan

Or have everything figured out

There’s nothing to prove to anyone

Remain open to grace, healing, and possibility

May you find peace where there’s noise

Rest while you’re striving

And confidence, one day at a time

One of the most dangerous lies we believe is this…

“If I slow down, or ask for help, it’s weakness”

Nothing could be further from the truth

Recuperation doesn’t label you as incapable

It makes you more considerate of yourself

And opens the door to healing

People today quietly face…

Decision fatigue

Chronic stress

Pressure to maintain an image

Misunderstanding with who they are and what they’re expected to be

And yet, they keep going and push harder

Rest isn’t disengagement with your circumstances

October is a mirror for memories

Crisp mornings, shorter days,

And the colors in the trees tell the same story

Adaptations aren’t optional; they’re necessary

And it can be amazing

I remember a season that was anything but brilliant

11 surgeries in 18 months

I struggled until I lost all my strength

Some days I didn’t know if I’d make it through

On the inside, I was battling fear, doubt,

And the temptation to give up

I now see October written all over that experience

Just like the trees that drop their leaves,

I had to relinquish control of my health, pride,

And my vision of what life was supposed to look like

It wasn’t easy

In my mental surrender,

God made room for something new

Gratitude for the smallest moments, deep empathy for others,

And a clear outlook for how I wanted to live

Autumn reminds us to do the same

Trees don’t cling to dead leaves

Labor Day used to feel like another long weekend

A cookout, football practice, and a new school year

I see it differently now

Labor isn’t only about what you do

It’s what it creates within you

The effort, perseverance, and struggles

They’ve all shaped us into who we are

When I think back to the hardest seasons of my life

Open-heart surgery, septic shock, kidney complications, heart attacks,

Hospital stays, alcoholism, incarceration, and personal development

I realized each one required a different trajectory

Not only with the mental toughness that was necessary,

It was a journey of endurance, faith, and surrender

Those experiences changed me

It built strength I didn’t know I had

Humility I didn’t want to learn

And gratitude I never want to lose

And it reminds me

The fruit of your work isn’t just what you produce

It’s in how it transforms you

This Labor Day, I hope you’ll rest, reflect,

And be proud of not only what you achieved

But for who you’ve become along the way.

Today, I want to share a dark chapter of my life

It led to the brightest dawn I never could imagine

I should’ve felt excitement about graduation in my senior year of college

My mother's terminal illness overshadowed it instead

As I watched her health deteriorate, I felt helpless with the inevitable

The sorrow was overwhelming

And my drinking spiraled into dependency to numb my feelings

My grades fell and treasured relationships crashed

The future I’d worked hard for was slipping away

All while my mother continued to fight her own battle

When the last semester arrived, I was barely functioning

The concerned looks from friends weren't enough to pull me back from the brink

It was my mom who, despite her suffering,

Confronted me with the truth I'd been avoiding

I needed help

The decision to enter rehab was the hardest choice I'd ever made

Leaving school meant delaying graduation

And I might not be there in my mother's last moments

Life doesn't pause for our plans

While I was in rehab, I received the news my mom had died

The grief was crushing, along with the guilt of my absence

I nearly abandoned my recovery

But something inside redirected me

My mother's last act of love set me on the path of healing

The least I could do was honor her by not giving up on myself

I made a promise to dedicate my sobriety to her memory

Every day without substances became a tribute to her courage

It was a step toward becoming the person she always believed I could be

We all face times that mold our lives into "before" and "after"

Sometimes they’re tragic, or beautiful, and they change us

What watershed event shifted the trajectory of your life?

In your darkest times, trust me, you will come upon a soothing light.

When I was a little boy, I did something foolish.

I locked myself in a shack with a group of geese.

At first, it seemed harmless.

I didn’t realize what I’d got myself into until those birds turned on me.

Pinching, nipping, and flapping around in an aggressive fury.

I became trapped and endured the chaos until someone rescued me.

The day ended with me soaking in a tub, vowing never to make that mistake again.

As I’ve grown older, I realize how we create the same scenario by locking ourselves into limiting beliefs.

Just as I imprisoned myself in that hut of hell.

We say, “I’m not talented enough,” or “This is how life is.”

Those ideas snap at us, just like the feisty geese.

It leaves us bruised by missed opportunities and repressed creativity.

We often live way below our ability.

The worst part?

Just like my childhood self, we can open the door to get out, yet stay inside.

Convinced that turmoil is inevitable, and we don’t deserve a better life.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

So how do you escape the deceit of inferior thinking?

The first thing is to identify your pessimistic outlook.

What thoughts are keeping you caged?

Write them down and challenge their validity.

My aunt saved me that day.

As adults, we need to liberate ourselves.

Use your dreams as the inspiration to act.

Become the person who pushes the stagnation aside.

Bust through the door into freedom!

Believe in yourself and apply for the job you don’t feel “qualified” for.

Visualize your ambitions and go for it.

It’s a simple act of moving forward into greatness.

Inch by inch…it’s a cinch.

Life is full of opportunities, so break away from your mental prison.

Because fear and self-doubt will fool you.

You’re capable of far more than you realize.

Take a bold step today to where your destiny is waiting for you.

A tapestry of moments, with each one precious and irreplaceable.

A handwritten letter, a shared story, or the quiet moment beside a sparkling tree.

These presents remain with us, long after we tear away the wrapping paper, and pack up the decorations for another year.

Perhaps this is where the true essence of Christmas lies, reminding us of what matters.

In a world that moves too fast, Christmas slows us down, beyond the rush of errands and endless to-do lists.

To embrace love, connection, and gratitude.

As we grow older, it’s easy to let the spirit of Christmas slip away.

The pace of life can make it hard to feel the wonder we had as children.

It wasn’t a terrible year, but it wasn’t great either.

It was just… there.

Life can get overwhelming with responsibilities and distractions, pulling you in different directions.

Planning helps identify your values and priorities to realize what’s important, rather than allowing the year to drift by on autopilot.

So, why should you do this?

You deserve a life that’s meaningful and aligned with who you are.

Thirty-three years ago, I got sober.

In reality, it was determined for me.

I was sitting in jail after a wild night of drinking, facing the possibility of spending the next 10 years in prison.

Through divine intervention, I side-stepped a lengthy incarceration.

But I had a lot of parameters placed around me for the next couple of years.

It was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me.

I haven’t even had a traffic ticket since that time.

And I transformed into a completely different person.

It wasn’t easy.

Throughout the ordeal, I gained clarity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the simple moments.

Then, just a few years back, challenges I never expected showed up.

Eleven surgeries in 18 months.

Kidney stones, open-heart surgery, 2 septic shock surgeries, losing a kidney, and 2 more heart attacks.

It was a season of vulnerability and uncertainty.

I gained heartfelt gratitude for…

The doctors, nurses, and loved ones who cared for me,

My body’s ability to heal, after all the trauma,

And most of all,

Profound lessons that taught me…

Life is precious.

Show up every day with intention.

Our true purpose is to love and encourage others.

Sobriety and faith shape the way I view the world.

Appreciation lives at the center of my being.

She had a natural talent.

Whenever she picked up a brush, magic seemed to flow onto the canvas.

But life got in the way.

A job, responsibilities, and distractions.

They always seemed more urgent.

Every evening, she’d say to herself, “I’ll have more time to paint tomorrow”.

This became weeks, then months, and soon… years had passed.

While clearing out her attic, she found an old canvas.

A wave of regret overwhelmed her as she looked at the half-finished painting. 

She realized tomorrow quietly slipped into yesterday’s.

Determined not to waste another moment, she picked up her brush that day.

She committed to painting for an hour every evening.

It wasn’t easy, but her passion reignited, and she created a gallery of work.

This brought joy to many admirers.

It reminds me how easily time slips away when we let “someday” fool us.

You don’t have infinite tomorrows, but you have today.

Self-Doubt and Negativity

Pessimism will whisper in your ear with thoughts like, “I’m not good enough” or “This will never work”.

Say to yourself, “I won't listen to this garbage!”

Focus on what's possible for you.

Procrastination

This is the most common form of resistance.

It’s fear of failure (or success) that keeps you from diving in.

One way to beat this is the “5-minute rule”.

Commit to working on your goal for five minutes, and you’ll become immersed and motivated to continue.

Perfectionism

When you’re working on something meaningful, the dread of making mistakes or being judged makes you want to keep tweaking things.

Successful people produce work that’s less than perfect.

Get started and improve along the way.

Being Stuck in “Research” Mode

Roadblocks appear as endless preparation.

You say things like, “I’ll start after I take one more course” or “I need to do more research before I’m ready”.

Groundwork is essential, but you can get tangled up.

Set a reasonable limit on your planning, then… Go for it!

Comparison

It’s tempting to envy people who seem further ahead, and you feel discouraged.

What you’re witnessing are their breakthroughs.

Everyone struggles.

Use their journey as inspiration and focus on your unique trajectory.

Give yourself credit for every step you take.

Make Resistance Your Friend

It’s a mindset you build.

When you push through the barriers, you grow stronger and more resilient.

Your ambitions are worth it!

With a bit of perseverance, your dreams will become a reality.
