The Elements of Confession
The story of David's infatuation with Bethsheba and their adulterous affair
Today I'm writing about 2 Samuel 11 in God's word.
David commits a terrible sin during the height of his power as the king of Israel.
The result would have severe consequences for the rest of his life.
He becomes infatuated with Bathsheba, the wife of one of his military officers.
What began as a glance led to lust...
And he ends up in an adulterous affair with her, which produced her pregnancy.
David tries to cover up his sin by arranging for her husband, Uriah, to lead a suicide mission into battle, which exposes him to a violent death.
He orders Uriah's military funeral and marries his pregnant wife.
Through his behavior, David broke four of the Ten Commandments...
He had coveted, stolen, committed adultery, and murdered.
Guilt catches up with David and he becomes oppressed by his sin.
Psalm 51 records his confession where he expresses four requests...
*Sin made him soiled, and he asked to be cleansed.
*Remorse fostered sickness, and he wants to be healed.
*Iniquity causes his sadness, and he yearns to be joyful.
*He's guilty of violating God's laws and begs for mercy.
David's confession in this Psalm shows us three crucial elements of confession...
*A correct view of sin.
*Our proper perspective of God.
*The precise outlook of self.
In the next 3 messages, I'll discuss the significance of each element.
Best wishes for a blessed day!
